Our Featured Speaker Lydie Denier

PictureLydie Denier

Author of
A Voice for Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens

She was his fiancé  and longtime confidante and speaks about the unbelievable tragedy  that occurred in Benghazi where he and three other Americans died in a terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy.  You may purchase her book and she will  sign it for you.

A Voice for Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens is much more than a memoir; it is a humanizing tribute to Chris Stevens the man, by the woman who loved him. Lydie M. Denier, former fiancée and the love of Chris Stevens’ life, paints an intimate portrait of the brilliant and mercurial diplomat, teacher and Arabist that was Chris Stevens.

Murdered in Benghazi on September 11, 2012, along with Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, Chris’ voice has been silenced, his personality buried beneath an avalanche of sordid headlines, political agendas and lies. In her book, Ms. Denier gives Chris a voice, finally setting the record straight about their passionate and turbulent love affair, his commitment to the people of the Middle East, and her dedicated quest to uncover the truth about what really happened the day Chris Stevens was killed and more importantly, why he was not protected. From Hollywood to Cairo, Washington D.C. to Libya, Ms. Denier shares the joy and pain of love, loss, tragedy and healing.

Featuring Speaker
Ruth Weiss

Vice President, Co-Founder Election Integrity Project California, Inc. (EIPCa)

Ruth’s father was a U.S. History teacher, who taught using primary documents to instill a deep understanding of this country’s real roots and purpose. As a result, she grew up with a healthy respect for America and everything that has made her exceptional.
As a Reagan Conservative and a Tea Party Member, she is proud to have attended the first 9-12 march on DC, the first National Tea Party Convention in Nashville, TN, the Glenn Beck American Revival training in Phoenix, and the Glenn Beck “Restoring Honor” event on the National Mall.
After retiring from 34 years of teaching high school English and Spanish, Ruth began to search for a new way of making a difference. She believes, as every American should, that voting in every election is the greatest privilege we have as American citizens, and the single most important act that we will ever do for ourselves and our posterity. Stories from around the nation of miscounted votes, of missing or miraculously “found” boxes of votes, of dead people mysteriously coming to life and voting on election day, etc. have become more than a joke to Ruth and a growing number of Americans.  If our election process is subverted by error, apathy, carelessness and fraud, then we are robbed of the significance and purpose of the great privilege of voting, and that leads directly to the demise of our Republic. Through great consideration and prayer, Ruth came to understand that being involved with the Election Integrity Project would be her chosen way to serve her country, and she began working with them as San Diego County Coordinator in February of 2011, just two months after the company’s founding.
Those “stories” have become more plentiful and more frightening year by year. The Republic of California is now in great danger of being “lost” permanently to the socialist, globalist oligarchy now in power.   This transformation has occurred primarily because our electoral system has been corrupted and hijacked. The citizens of our state must regain their God-given power to self-govern through the right to fairly elect those who will govern us.
In March of 2017, Ruth Weiss and Linda Paine began the effort to found a nonprofit organization to continue the work of the Election Integrity Project. On July 21, 2017, with the help of returning EIP Board member Ellen Gifford and some pro-bono assistance from several attorneys, the Election Integrity Project California, Inc. (EIPCa) was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) California public benefit nonprofit corporation.        Ruth is currently serving as EIPCa’s Vice President, Director of Education and Training, and Director of the Southern Region of California, consisting of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Featuring Speaker
Diane Harkey

Chairwoman of the State Board of Equalization

Diane Harkey was elected in November 2014 to represent the State Board of Equalization's Fourth District. Harkey recently served three terms in the California State Assembly representing the 73rd District encompassing south Orange County.

As Chairwoman of the State Board of Equalization, Diane capitalizes on her private and public sector experience to promote the rights and interests of all taxpayers.  Harkey advocates for policies that support job creation in the private sector, improve California's state budget outlook, and reduce the burden of complying with government audits and various tax regulations.

Harkey also serves as Chair of the Business Taxes Committee, the regulatory body at the BOE charged with writing regulations implementing California's business tax regulations.

In her first year at the Board, Harkey successfully pushed for changes to provide clarity on 1031 exchanges in real estate transactions. Her office solved over 400 constituent cases in 2015 and has held many successful events educating taxpayers on Proposition 13, California's manufacturing exemption and many areas of state tax law.

Harkey believes that California must establish new policies that ensure future improvements in transportation, water, and other necessities, so our state can retain its place as one of the top-ranking economies in the world. Harkey works directly with other Board Members, the Governor's Administration, and the State Legislature to make California golden once again.

Harkey graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Economics from the University of California, Irvine and enjoyed a successful 30-year career in corporate finance and banking. Working in good and bad economic climates with individuals, small business owners, and leaders of publicly-traded companies helped form the pragmatic business perspective that she brings to the Board of Equalization.

Harkey won her election to the Board of Equalization with over 61% of the vote and is proud to represent 9.5 million constituents in the counties of Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, and the southernmost portion of San Bernardino County.

Also Featuring Speaker
Carl DeMaio

Chairman, Reform California – Senior Fellow, The Performance Institute Host,
The Carl DeMaio Show, AM-600 KOGO

Carl DeMaio knows how to reform government -
and he has built an entire business and a political career on making broken government programs work again for the people.

At the age of 23, Carl DeMaio started his first company -- the Performance Institute -- to provide training and consulting solutions to help financially-troubled government entities cut costs while improving performance. DeMaio turned his business success into a life-long crusade to improve the
performance, transparency, efficiency and accountability of government at
all levels.

DeMaio won a seat on the San Diego City Council in 2008 -- and helped turn
that city around from the brink of bankruptcy through his "Roadmap to Recovery" reform agenda.

DeMaio is now tackling state-wide fiscal reform policy in his new role as Chairman of Reform California. DeMaio is also continuing to speak out on local issues, as co-host of his daily news and talk show in KOGO-AM 600.

Turning Around San Diego - Author of the Pension Reform Initiative

DeMaio’s work began in a “watchdog” role, as he helped uncover the fiscal
crisis in the City of San Diego. After years of financial crisis, draconian service cuts, crumbling roads and infrastructure, and little action by city leaders on a host of pressing problems, DeMaio stepped forward with a comprehensive "Reform Agenda" to fix the problems.

DeMaio advanced reform through a variety of ballot measures – gaining voter approval of measures to subject city services to “competitive outsourcing,”
ban discriminatory union-only hiring deals known as Project Labor Agreements, and converting the city to a Strong Mayor form of governance.

While on the City Council, DeMaio led the effort to cut red tape on small businesses, reform the city’s contracting processes to expedite infrastructure projects, and enact some of the toughest “Sunshine Law” open government requirements in the nation.
In 2012, DeMaio crafted and led a citizens campaign to qualify and pass the “Comprehensive Pension Reform” Initiative – the first-of-its kind measure to switch San Diego from a Defined Benefit Pension Plan to a 401(k) retirement program. DeMaio’s measure also figured out how to legally reform “vested” pension benefits for existing employees by freezing pensionable pay and
ending abuses such as pension spiking.

Overcoming Childhood Adversity to Achieve Success in Business

Carl DeMaio is no stranger to adversity. Carl's mother passed away two weeks after his father abandoned the family. At age 14, Carl was taken in by Jesuits and given the opportunity to earn his way to Georgetown University. DeMaio worked two jobs through college, completing his degree early.

By age 30, DeMaio had founded two successful businesses. In 1998, he
founded the
Performance Institute and built the organization into the
largest government reform think tank in the nation and the leading authority
on performance-based management in government, law enforcement, non-profits and schools.

In 2003, DeMaio founded the American Strategic Management Institute
(ASMI), which provides training and education in corporate financial and performance management. In late 2007, DeMaio sold both of his companies – though he continues to serve as a “Senior Fellow” advising on policy issues.

Our speaker this month is James Makshanoff, a 24-year veteran of city administration in four cities, most recently Azusa, before taking over his position as San Clemente’s City Manager in September, 2014.  He holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science/Public Administration from California State University at Long Beach University at Long Beach.  He has been 'vacationing' at San Clemente State Beach since he was two years old.
There are many issues facing our fair city, and he welcomes your questions.  Are you wondering about the latest information on the Toll Road? San Onofre Power Plant?  Proposed Outlet Signage?  Sober Living Homes?
Bring your ideas and enjoy the discussion.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a package of diapers to our May 10th meeting for the Military Outreach Baby Shower for Camp Pendelton families that will be given by SCARWF on May 18th.
